The New Green Map of Denmark - and Those Who Are Drawing It

Denmark is undergoing a historic transformation. Large agricultural areas will be converted into forests, meadows, and lakes. Coastal areas and fjords will have cleaner water. This means the map of Denmark, as we know it, is about to change – with more nature and a healthier environment for both wildlife and people.

But who decides where and how these changes will happen? The answer lies with the local tripartite bodies.

Denmark has been divided into 23 local tripartite bodies tasked with driving the green transformation of the landscape.

Who Is Drawing the New Map of Denmark

A total of 23 local tripartite bodies have been established to ensure that the transformation of the landscape respects local conditions. Each partnership consists of:

  • One or two representatives from each municipality within the catchment area
  • One or two representatives from local agricultural organizations
  • One or two representatives from local nature organizations
  • One representative from the Danish Nature Agency

Together, they are responsible for identifying the best solutions, ensuring that the landscape transformation is carried out in close cooperation with local communities.

From Agriculture to Nature

The national green plan aims to:

  • Plant 250,000 hectares of new forest – an area equivalent in size to Luxembourg
  • Restore natural meadows, bogs, and river valleys – 140,000 hectares of lowland farmland will be converted into nature
  • Improve the aquatic environment – making fjords, lakes, and coastal waters healthier
  • Reduce CO₂ emissions – including by phasing out farming on the most climate-damaging agricultural land

What Does This Mean for You?

The green transition will reshape landscapes across the country. As a result, you may notice:

  • More natural areas near you
  • Cleaner water in fjords, rivers, and lakes
  • Local projects that offer insights into how your municipality is changing

Collaboration Is Key

Although it is a national plan, it is the local tripartite partnerships that bring it to life. They work closely with citizens and organizations to ensure that the new natural areas are created with respect for local communities, agriculture, and nature.
